For the last two months our household has gotten the habit of walking each morning at 6:30…in training, as it were, for more travel. It is lovely in the quiet neighborhood, pitch black when we leave the house, while it stays so dark we can hear the hoot of a Great Horned Owl and as it starts to lighten, the crows start their jabber and even lighter brings small birds scratching in the bushes.

It Was Early
It was early,
which has always been my hour
to begin looking
at the world

and of course,
even in the darkness,
to begin
listening into it,

especially
under the pines
where the owl lives
and sometimes calls out

as I walk by,
as he did
on this morning.
So many gifts!

I made this collage with my iPhone to express my motivation for all these walks…
